HIKING GEAR

INFANT DAY HIKING GEAR

* I receive compensation for items marked by an asterisk

When my babies were too young to go in a child carrier backpack, these are the essentials that I would bring with me for a day hike. I would substitute or add gear (such as layers, amount of formula and diapers, etc.) depending on the weather conditions.

  • CARRIER: Ergobaby Omni 360 (if you have twins, the TwinGo carrier is a good option)*

  • DIAPER KIT: diapers, wipes (in a ziploc bag to cut down on weight), disposable bags for dirty diapers, change of clothes for blow outs

  • SIT PAD: Z Seat by Therm-a-rest. Great for sitting on while nursing/feeding your baby as well as laying your baby on when you do a diaper change on trail.*

  • SUN PROTECTION: Sun hat, Sunglasses (I use these in the winter to protect my baby’s eyes from the sun reflecting off the snow), Sunscreen *

  • BURP CLOTH

  • BOTTLE

  • WATER BOTTLE

  • FORMULA: I pre measure the formula powder into the dry bottle and add water later. I will also bring a small bag of formula (already measured out) in case the hike takes longer than expected.

  • GARMIN INREACH MESSENGER: I cannot stress enough how important it is to have an emergency device with you—especially with little ones! We love the inReach Messenger because it is small, compact, and easy to use!*

  • DOWN BUNTING: Columbia Powder-Lite Reversible Down Bunting*

  • FLEECE BUNTING: Columbia Fleece Western Barlow Bunting- I love that this has integrated mitts to help keep your little one warm!*

BABY/TODDLER DAY HIKING GEAR

Being prepared is all the more important when hiking with little ones. Here are 15 items I don't go hiking without when I'm out on the trails with my kiddos! We use the Osprey Poco Plus Child Carrier, which has a 26L capacity and is great for storing all your essentials.

CHILD CARRIER

  • CARRIER: Osprey Poco Plus Child Carrier*

  • RAIN COVER: Osprey Poco Plus Rain Cover

  • TRAIL MAGIK: I cannot speak highly enough of this product. This is a minimalistic carrier that attaches on the front of a framed backpack. It allows you to carry two kids at once (one in a child carrier backpack and one in the Trail Magik) or to simply give your toddler the option to have a break from hiking and be carried for a bit. This gives you the freedom to go further with little ones! A MUST HAVE! Save with our DISCOUNT CODE: ADVENTUREMAMA10

  • TREKKING POLES: Black Diamond Carbon Z Trekking Poles- Carrying a child on your back requires a lot of balance on more technical terrain. I love these trekking poles because they are lightweight and fold up easily for those moments when you want some extra stability.

SAFETY

  • FIRST AID KIT: At a minimum, I always make sure I have Children’s Motrin, Children’s Benadryl, a syringe (to rinse dirt or other objects out of the eyes), hand sanitizer, bandaids, and tweezers.

  • GARMIN inREACH: Garmin InReach Messenger-I love this because it is small, compact, and so easy to use. Having a satellite emergency device is important whether you are hiking solo or with the whole family.*

SUN PROTECTION

  • SUNGLASSES: Mausito Baby Sunglasses. We love these specifically for the winter because they allow for all around coverage to protect our babies’ eyes from the sun reflecting off of the snow. It has a great elastic head strap that is comfortable as well! *

  • SUNSCREEN: Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen

  • SUNHAT: Bucket hats are great to give all-around protection.

  • * The Osprey Poco Plus comes with an integrated Sunshade!

  • SUNSHIRT: Patagonia Capilene Silkweight UPF Hoody

DIAPERS

  • DIAPER KIT: diapers, wipes (in a ziploc bag to cut down on weight), disposable bags for dirty diapers, change of clothes for blow outs. I put all of this in a stuff sack to make it easily accessible.

  • SIT PAD: Z Seat by Therm-a-rest. Great for sitting on while nursing/feeding your baby as well as laying your baby on when you do a diaper change on trail. *

    FEEDINGS

  • BURP CLOTH

  • BOTTLE

  • WATER BOTTLE: The BeFree Water Bottle allows us to cut down on weight but not have to worry about running out of water. We plan our hikes to be around water in the summers and bring one water bottle along with the BeFree to replenish our water. *

  • FORMULA: I pre measure the formula powder into the dry bottle and add water later. I will also bring a small bag of formula (already measured out) in case the hike takes longer than expected.

  • SNACKS

    LAYERS

The layers you bring will depend on the season and the conditions when you go out for your hike. Here are some of our favorites:

  • MERINO WOOL BASE LAYER: Iksplor Merino Wool Base Layers- these layers will keep your little one warm when its cold out and cool when its warm out. Super soft, antibacterial, and… UPF 50 sun protection! Save with our DISCOUNT CODE: ADVENTUREMAMA10

  • RAINSUIT: Tuffo Rain Suit- this is great for splashing in puddles, full coverage during a rain storm, and for days when they want to crawl around and get messy. The Tuffo Rain Suit comes with reinforced knees and bottom so you don’t have to worry about tears. The best part is that it is incredibly affordable!*

  • FLEECE JACKET: We love the Patagonia Baby Micro D Snap-T Jacket. Columbia * also makes some great fleece jackets for little ones and is a bit more affordable.

  • DOWN BUNTING: Columbia Powder-Lite Reversible Down Bunting (For babies 18mo or younger)*

  • FLEECE BUNTING: Columbia Fleece Western Barlow Bunting- I love that this has integrated mitts to help keep your little one warm! (For babies 6mo or younger) *
